🩺 MECHANISM OF ACTION OF EACH MEDICATION
1️⃣ Albendazole + Ivermectin (Bandy Plus 12)
✔ Albendazole – Mechanism of Action
Albendazole is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic acting on nematodes (roundworms) and some tapeworms.
Mechanism:
- Binds to parasitic β-tubulin, preventing microtubule polymerization
- Inhibits glucose uptake → parasite loses energy
- Leads to immobilization, paralysis, and death
Effective against:
Roundworms, hookworms, pinworms, whipworms, some tapeworm species, hydatid disease, neurocysticercosis (under supervision).
✔ Ivermectin – Mechanism of Action
Ivermectin targets nematodes and some ectoparasites.
Mechanism:
- Binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in parasite nerve & muscle cells
- Causes massive chloride influx → flaccid paralysis
- Parasite loses ability to feed → dies or is expelled
Effective against:
Strongyloides, onchocerca, some roundworms, scabies, lice.
2️⃣ Praziquantel 600 mg
Primarily used for tapeworms and flukes (trematodes).
✔ Mechanism of Action
- Increases calcium permeability in tegument & muscles of the parasite
- Causes spastic paralysis
- Damages parasite surface → immune system can attack
- Leads to dislodgement and death
Effective against:
Tapeworms (Taenia, Diphyllobothrium), schistosomiasis, liver flukes, lung flukes.
3️⃣ Fluconazole 400 mg
This is antifungal use for Candida and other fungal infections.
✔ Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits fungal CYP450 enzyme lanosterol 14-α-demethylase
- Blocks conversion of lanosterol → ergosterol
- Without ergosterol, fungal cell membranes become unstable
- Leads to fungal cell death or growth inhibition
Effective against:
Candida (yeast infections), cryptococcus, some dermatophytes.
4️⃣ Tinidazole 500 mg
Tinidazole is an antiprotozoal and anti-anaerobic antibiotic.
✔ Mechanism of Action
- Enters anaerobic protozoa (Giardia, Entamoeba, Trichomonas)
- Activated inside the organism → creates cytotoxic radicals
- Radicals damage DNA → cell death
Effective against:
Giardia, amoebiasis, trichomoniasis, some anaerobic bacteria.
